In 1841, then-Governor John Morehead foresaw the potential for a thriving city where Beaufort Inlet and the Newport River intersect. Like any good financial forecaster, Morehead and his associates promptly bought up large tracts of land in the area and worked to extend the North Carolina Railroad to bring in businesses and people. When the railroad was completed in 1858, available property sold in record time and Morehead City was born
