Beaufort is the third oldest town in the state of North Carolina. Originally founded in 1722 this historic town, more fondly known as "Fish Town", was home to sea men and their families. Located close to some of the most dangerous shores in the world Beaufort had a built in security system which lent its self to keeping the town un touched by time for many a year.
Among one of the most compelling pieces of the history Beaufort, NC boasts the discovery the discover of the Queen Anne's Revenge in 1997 ship of the infamous pirate Blackbeard also known as Edward Teach. Discovered only 2 miles from the shores of the Town in a mere 20 feet of water the ship has been excavated and pieces of this national treasure such as the bronze bell, cannons, and deck guns are featured in the local maritime museum in Beaufort before being sent on a tour of the country.
Now Beaufort’s lovely tree lined streets and homes dating from as early as the 18th Century all impart that heritage. Classic and quiet this town provides a break from the stress of industry filled life and transports you back into time when things were quiet and neighbors knew each other. But don't mistake the quietness of the town for lack of interesting things to do. Some of the close and family friendly activities include Mac Daddy's and the Carteret County Speedway. You can also try out the the Morehead Center Community Theater only a few minutes’ drive over the bridge. There are also and numerous golf courses nearby, including the Brandywine Golf Club giving you the perfectly balanced escape.
Some of the more popular historical and outdoor attractions in and around Beaufort include Shackelford Banks just off the coast by ferry, Fort Macon State Park located right in Atlantic Beach North Carolina (link to about AB page here) and the NC Maritime Museum, with artifacts from Black Beard's flagship "Queen Anne's Revenge" on display. The best part about being a small town is everything is always within easy driving distance providing a rich history of North Carolina's coastal legacy from generations past.
Fresh seafood is always on the menu at local restaurants in Beaufort, NC. Local restaurants are skilled navigators of the catch of the day markets and make it their job to be the best in town. One of our favorite places to dine is Front Street Grill at Stillwater, boasting some of the best views in Beaufort and nestled right on the water this upscale restaurant features some of the best food in town. For a more family friendly scene try local favorite, Clawson’s Restaurant, known for the daily drink specials and convenient main street location.
