Pine Knoll Shores, NC Real Estate
Florida had better watch out—recent studies show that North Carolina has bumped them off the number one spot in for future retirement. And we have Pine Knoll Shores real estate values to show you. The National Active Retirement Association (NARA) said that, though North Carolina held the number five spot for twenty years, it is now surpassing Florida and Arizona as the most desired retirement state. “The fact is, Florida is somewhat losing its grip on the retirement industry and other states - especially those scenic but less expensive areas in the South and the West - are going to capitalize in the future,” said NARA’s Dan Owens. The generally mild year-round climate, scenery, food and beaches are only a few of the things that seem to be drawing these retirees, and keeping the locals as locals. One of these ideal retirement areas in North Carolina is Pine Knoll Shores, as a 2000 census shows. Of the 1,524 residents in our town, nearly half (42.7%) were of the age of 65 of older—retirees who found his or her perfect spot. That’s not even including the tourists who vacation yearly to scope out our area, planning their big move to the southeast.

Perhaps what people find so special about this town is its commitment to the local ecosystem. While our residential community only encompasses two square miles, protected wetlands, maritime forests, and ocean dunes surround us. These have remained unspoiled since our ratification in 1973.

Also, we are nationally recognized as a Tree City, USA. (http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCityUSA/index.cfm) We’re truly dedicated to maintaining the beauty that surrounds us. This means that the town has a department that cares for the trees, a Tree Care Ordinance to provide guidance for maintenance and planting, and a Community Forestry Program. We celebrate Arbor Day as well—on the country’s first Arbor Day, 1 million trees were planted.

There are public beaches in The Town of Pine Knoll Shores, and many more in the nearby areas http://www.protectthebeach.com/publicaccess/pksindianbeach.pdf. By moving to Pine Knoll Shores, you’ll have your own little piece of the beach to wake up to, every day. These beaches are in beautiful condition, having been taken care of for thirty years since the town started.

Don’t forget the wildlife! North Carolina is famous for its wild horses that live in some of the beachy areas, and these are only a short drive away. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is full of interesting things for everyone, and is constantly changing. http://www.ncaquariums.com/pks/pksindex.htm

Something very unique to the nearby town, and which offers even more evidence that the community cares about the environment, is the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Protection Program. This is an annual event in which volunteers from the community check the beaches for mother loggerhead seaturtle tracks. When tracks are found, a coordinater is called and they locate and secure the nest of sea turtle eggs. The nests are sectioned off, which enables the seaturtles to be born without being disturbed. In the 2007 season, 15 of 17 nests hatched successfully! http://www.ncislandreview.com/features/turtle_tracks.asp

Perhaps it’s the friendly locals, or the unique cuisine and culture that made North Carolina the number one state for future retirement. Or maybe it has something to do with the preservation of the landscape that makes everything so one-of-a-kind in the first place. Whatever the reason, if you’re planning on buying a house in Pine Knoll Shores, you can rest easy, knowing that you’re going to be given the best that southeastern North Carolina has to offer.
