The town was named after Sir Henry Havelock, as are seven other cities in the United States (Havelock was a popular British general stationed in India, whose main feat was to recapture an Indian city during a rebellion in 1857). Located conveniently between the former state capitol of New Bern and the relaxing area of the beaches, Havelock is within driving distance of the best that North Carolina has to offer.

Obviously, Havelock’s proximity to MCAS Cherry Point is ideal for military families but that’s not to say that others shouldn’t consider relocating there. Even before the town’s official establishment in 1959, the town became the home of the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in 1940. Town demographics give the same evidence—the majority of the population has a median age of 23. Our Havelock, NC houses for sale are within close range of Cherry Point for anyone who needs a convenient location. Craven Community College, Havelock High School, and a number of middle and elementary schools are all within a short drive. There are also two private schools nearby.

As mentioned above, the historic town of New Bern is just a 25-minute drive away. This is a great place for a day trip, with many available restaurants, movie theatres, a bowling alley, and other forms of entertainment. Historic downtown New Bern is a relaxing place to be, offering a quaint waterfront park and locally-owned restaurants that offer the finest seafood in the area. If you’re one for festivals, New Bern is celebrated for its MUMfest http://www.mumfest.com/ occurring every year in October. The weather is still warm this time of year in southeastern North Carolina, and makes a day spent walking around the waterfront and historic streets for live music, fresh food, and fair rides all the more enjoyable. On July 4th, you can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show on the waterfront. And any time you’d like, visit Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens for a guided tour of governor William Tryon’s enormous house from the 18th century. http://www.tryonpalace.org

Another close area of interest is the Croatan National Forest. This is not a place for the faint of heart, as it is truly the wilderness, but a great way to get in touch with nature regardless, for our serious campers, backpackers and hikers. http://ncnatural.com/NCUSFS/Croatan/ This 157,000 ft forest offers campgrounds, hiking, fishing, and hunting opportunities for anyone looking for a day to just get away from it all. The forest is located directly on a small beach, as well, for optimal saltwater fishing. The unique ecosystem, with its swamps and bogs, is reminiscent of Florida’s Everglades, so don’t be surprised if you come across an alligator in your travels! The fertility of the land gives way to many species of animals, including bears, osprey, and wild turkeys. Two lakes, Great Lake and Catfish Lake, are perfect for canoeing or kayaking.

And while you’re there, just make the short drive the rest of the way to the town and island of Emerald Isle, for a day at the beach. From 500 AD until the American Revolution, it was home to many tribes of Native Americans, and then fishermen, before it was turned over to the founders who earned it the title of “A Family Beach.” This is due to a lack of oceanfront hotels and other enormous buildings to take away from the charm of a family beach. It’s a great place to bring your kids and spouse for miles and miles of sandy shores. http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/ All of this is just a short drive from your home in Havelock!

Whether you’re from a military family or not, buying a house in Havelock, NC would lead you to the many opportunities for experiencing the best that North Carolina has to offer.
