Originally founded on the vision of Appleton Oaksmith Atlantic Beach was the expected to be the next destination resort town of the East Coast in the late 1800's. With grand plans in mind Oaksmith, his wife, four daughters set out to make Atlantic beach a reality but after a tragic accident in 1879 in which all four of his daughters were lost Oaksmith and his wife were inconsolable and gave up on the project.
Left to weather the dream of a bathing pavilion and eventual hotel resort town in Atlantic Beach was abandoned for eight long years. Eight years later entrepreneurs John J. Royal of Morehead City and Winfield S. Chadwick of Beaufort took it upon themselves to build the long lost dream of Oaksmith and his wife. In 1887 they built the first bathing pavilion on Bogue Banks which is now better known as the prestigious Club Colony. The bathing Pavilion became an overnight success. With lack of other accommodations in the area because of the destruction caused by the hurricane of 1879 people came in droves to bathe once again in the glorious sun and warm waters of the Atlantic.
